Laurel's Recovery Update

Posted by

Unfortunately, #cxisnotcoming for me this year, as my recovery is likely to be longer than originally anticipated. Four weeks after the crash, the realization that I still could not lift my arm without assistance meant more doctor visits. In addition to the broken bones I suffered in the crash, we now know that I also sustained a nerve injury near the spine that resulted in numbness in the top third of my right arm and an inability to use my deltoid or rotator cuff muscles. The good news is that feeling has returned to much of the area that was previously numb. Whether or not I will have to undergo surgery is still unknown; ideally, my body will recover on its own. The bad news is that nerve tissue regenerates very very slowly.

More good news is that I’ve figured out how to ride and to stay active, healthy and happy during the recovery process. I genuinely appreciate the positive messages and am already looking forward to what next year brings. Thank you to an amazing and always supportive Raleigh-Clement team for being there for me since day one. I will be at select races as part of the Raleigh-Clement team to support and cheer on my fantastic three teammates Caroline Mani, Jamey Driscoll and Lance Haidet who, I know, will have an incredible season!
